The oldest building in the village is St Bartholomew's Church and parts of the Norman original (1090) can be seen todayCyclists and walkers can enjoy the Cuckoo Trail that begins in nearby Heathfield and ends just outside Eastbourne. Traffic free and with gentle gradients the Trail largely follows a disused railway line and crosses unspoiled Sussex countryside. For more information click below.

3 miles from Heathfield on the A272 just before the small village of Hadlow Down lies Wilderness Wood - a working woodland in the High Weald AONB with a host of attractions for all the family. Click Wilderness Wood for more details.

Just across the border in Kent lies Bewl Water - the largest man-made expanse of water in South East England. There is a beautiful 12 mile walk around Bewl Water; this is also accessible by mountain bike. Water-based sports and activities are provided. For more information click here.

For garden lovers there are many world famous gardens within easy reach of Burwash, including:

Pashley Manor is open from April to September - 7 miles by main road, less if you know the local lanes!

Great Dixter is one of the most beautiful gardens in Britain - birthplace and home of the late Christopher Lloyd; Grade 1 listed Tudor house restored by Edward Lutyens

Bedgebury Pinetum is less than a 20 minute drive, and with nearly 10,000 trees and shrubs is home to the most complete collection of temperate conifers in the world. It has plentyof walking and mountain bike trails, and an adventure playground for children.

The National Trust Sissinghurst Castlemanages the world-renowned Sissinghurst Castle Gardens (pictured right) created by Vita Sackville West and her husband Harold Nicolson, and regarded by many experts as the finest garden in Britain.

Less than a 30 minuted drive from Burwash, Sissinghurst also has an excellent restaurant serving organic produce grown on the estate.

Scotney Castle is one of the most romantic gardens in Britain designed around the ruins of a 14th century castle. It's approximately a 20 minute drive from Burwash.

BodiamBodiam Castle (left) is a similar distance, and is a great destination for families particularly when combined with a nostalgic trip on a steam train on the Kent & East Sussex Railway

Battle Abbey and the nearby site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 is also well worth a visit.

In nearby Eastbourne with its classic seaside attractions can also be found the exciting new art gallery and centre for visual arts the Towner Gallery.

Lovers of the arts will appreciate the Modernist iconic building from the 1930s inde la warr pavilion neaarby Bexhill - the de la Warr pavilion (right).

It is home for regular arts and music events, and temporary and touring exhibitions throughout the year. Located on the sea front in Bexhill, it also has a wonderful cafe with fabulous sea views!
