Road

All three villages lie on the A265 that links Heathfield with Etchingham and Hurst Green. Here the A265 connects with the A21 - the major road link between London, Sevenoaks and Hastings.

Tunbridge Wells is a 25 minute drive, Battle can be reached in 20 minutes by car, and the coastal towns of Eastbourne, Bexhill and Hastings are around a 30 minute drive.

 

Rail

SouthEastern trains serve Stonegate (2 miles from Burwash Common) and Etchingham (2 miles from Burwash), both stations are on the London to Hastings line. There is a frequent service of trains in both directions seven days a week. Click here for latest timetable.

Bistro@thestation, www.bistroatthestation.co.uk a local community enterprise, is open Monday to Friday from 5:30am until 2:00pm offering teas, coffees, pastries and other goodies.  Also open Wednesday to Friday 5-30pm to 11-00pm for tapas and wine.

General bus information

Burwash bus service 231

Bus 231 from 20th February 2017 runs on Mondays to Fridays (except Bank Holidays), serving Burwash (including Strand Meadow) and generally to a 2 hourly frequency. The 231 route includes Broad Oak, Heathfield, Uckfield, Etchingham and Etchingham Station. It is run by Seaford & District and funded by East Sussex County Council.   • Buses depart from Burwash Strand Meadow to Heathfield and Uckfield at 07:50 (07:58 on non-schooldays), 09:45, 11:45, 13:45, 16:05 and 17:05. These buses serve Burwash Post Office 3 minutes later, from where there is a later departure at 18:08. The 07:50 journey additionally serves Heathfield Community College.
  • From Uckfield bus station bus 31 departs for Burwash and Strand Meadow at 06:40, 07:35, 10:35, 12:35, 14:35, 15:50 and 17:05.  
  • Buses depart from Heathfield High Street for Burwash and Strand Meadow at 07:00, 08:00 (08:10 on non-schooldays), 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 16:12 and 17:27. The 15:00 journey also serves Heathfield Community College at 15:15 on schooldays.
  • From Burwash Post Office buses depart for Etchingham Station at 07:12, 08:23, 11:12, 13:12, 15:12 (15:30 on schooldays), 16:24 and 17:39. The first two do not serve Strand Meadow.
  • From Etchingham Station buses depart for Strand Meadow and Burwash at 07:42 (07:50 on non-schooldays), 09:40, 11:40, 13:40, 16:00, 17:00 and 18:03. The 18:03 calls at Strand Meadow at request of passengers already on board the bus.
  • At Etchingham Station connections are available to London bound trains departing at 07:31 and 08:42, and with trains arriving from London at 11:30, 13:30, 16:35 and 17:56.
  • Connections are also available to Hastings bound trains departing at 08:36, 11:30, 13:30, 15:30 and 17:56, and with trains arriving from Hastings at 07:31, 16:46 and 17:47.
  • In Heathfield bus 231 offers connections with Stagecoach’s service 51 to Eastbourne, departing from Heathfield High Street at 08:38, 10:08, 12:08 and 14:08.
  • Bus 231 connects with buses from Eastbourne arriving in Heathfield at 08:00, 10:54, 12:54, 14:54 and 15:57.
  • In Uckfield connections are available with Compass Travel’s service 31 to/from Haywards Heath and to Brighton & Hove Bus Company’s services 28/29 to/from Lewes and Brighton.  

Free concessionary bus passes may be used after 09:30. Day return and weekly tickets are available. Passengers connecting with other buses will usually find that the one day Discovery ticket offers the best value. This offers unlimited travel on nearly all buses in East and West Sussex, Surrey, Kent and East Hampshire and is bought from the bus driver on the day. Prices £8.50 (adult), £7 (child under 16), £16 family (for 5 people, with a minimum of 1 adult and a maximum of 2 adults. Prices correct at February 2017.  

Please note that a Saturday service no longer operate on the 231.

Battle Area Community Transport

Battle Area Community Transport provides a Fridays only service B74 connecting Burwash with Etchingham, Robertsbridge, Mountfield and Battle.  It leaves Burwash (opposite Post Office) at 10:55, returning at 13.20 from Battle arriving back in Burwash at 14.10. Free concessionary bus passes are valid on this bus.
