Burwash Village Hall

Charity Registration No: 305350

am very grateful to all those who keep our Hall in good working order during the year: David and Rita (our cleaners), Tom Appleby, Michael Ashdown, Archway Builders and British Gas (who look after our boiler). They all give our needs priority and it is appreciated very much.

We have started planning for this year’s Burwash Open Gardens event to take place on Sunday 25th June. If you would like to open your garden for this event, which is our major fundraiser for Hall funds, please let me know. No commitment is expected yet, but an ‘expression of interest’ would be very welcome!

April Update

The April whist evening raised another £60 for our funds. There will be no whist in May due to the Hall being used as a polling station. Our next whist evenings will be on Thursdays 1st June and 6th July at 7pm in the Village Hall: only £3 per person for an evening of whist and snacks.

Thank you very much to those who supported our Coffee Morning in the Hall on 30th March. A further £262 was raised towards the cost of refurbishing the toilet facilities. Tom Appleby is very kindly drawing up the plans and arranging quotations for the work, which we hope will be carried out in August. At the same time (or very soon after) we plan to install a drop-down baby changing table.

I am sure you will have noticed (when using/examining our new cigarette butt disposal box!) that we have tidied up the front of the building by using woodchip to fill the gap between the pathway and the front and side of the building. Our thanks go to Mike Ashdown for this work: it is good to see him back after his operation.

February Update

The Pantomime was a great success again and we also welcomed a group of ladies from London getting their dance routine ready for a feature at a wedding.

Our February and March Whist evenings were well supported and raised £56.70 and £65.70 respectively towards funds. Our next Whist evenings will be on 6th April and 1st June at 7.00 pm.in the Village Hall. We shall be unable to hold our May Whist evening due to the Hall being used as a polling station. Only £3 per person for an evening of whist and snacks.

A cigarette butt disposal box has been fitted to the outside wall, under the snooker room front window. We’d be very grateful if you could use the box if you feel the need to pop outside for a cigarette whilst using the Hall. Thank you very much for your co-operation. Thanks too to Steve who fitted it for us!!

Please contact Peter Angove on 01435 883288 if you would like more details of how to book an event. We are fairly busy, but there are some free slots on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

December Update

Hall funds have received a further £40.20 from the sale of Richard and Lynda Maude-Roxby’s apples, bringing the total they have donated to £190.20, for which we are very grateful.

I hope you can see in the photo below how delighted the 20 players at our November Whist were with the comfort of their new padded chairs and card tables, which were kindly provided by Burwash Parish Council. These continue to be gentle, fun evenings. Why not try coming along to one? Fellow players will be happy to help you if you haven’t played for a long time.

1st December, 5th January, 2nd February at 7.00 pm.
Only £3 per person for an evening of whist and snacks.

Members of the Hall Management Committee will, once again, be selling tickets for their Christmas Hamper Raffle at The Bear during the evening of 7th December. Tickets will be £1 per strip of 5 tickets.

The members of the Hall Management Committee are very grateful for your support during 2016 and wish you all a Very Happy Christmas!

October Update

Following the very generous grant from Burwash Parish Council, we have taken delivery of 16 comfortable chairs, 4 smaller versions of the folding tables we already have, and 9 new folding card tables.

We have also been very grateful recipients of a £100 donation from C Waterhouse & Sons. This will be added to our fundraising to refurbish the ladies and gents’ toilet areas. We are hoping this work will be carried out during August 2017 - unless we have another leak in the meantime!!

Bertie Pearce’s Magic Show at the Hall was so much fun and raised £264.50 towards funds. Together with St Bartholomew’s, we baked and served refreshments at the August Bank Holiday Fair. From the proceeds we donated £100 to the Playing Field Association. The rest was divided between St Bartholomew’s and Village Hall funds and this added a further £370 to our fundraising total.

There was no Whist in September, but we return on Thursday 6th October, 3rd November and 1st December. These continue to be gentle, fun evenings. Why not try coming along to one? Fellow players will be happy to help you if you haven’t played for a long time.

So far, 2016 has been busy in the village hall. Events held in the first third of the year have included the very entertaining Pantomime, the delicious Lenten Lunch, two successful discos organised by St Bartholomew’s for the younger members of our community, a group of keen keep-fitters from West London, a two-day exhibition of their beautiful work organised by Burwash Quilters, two days of training for volunteers arranged by the National Trust, and Mary Taylor’s Soup Lunch. All of these events in addition to the regular meetings held by many groups: BLG, Flower Arrangers, Circuit Training, Pilates, Horticultural Society, Dance and Ballet classes, Monday Painters, Burwash Quilters, Musical Theatre, Not So Young Club, Short Mat Bowls and Whist Club.

I am delighted to report that the latter group had a record 23 players at the April meeting, raising a profit of £90+ for Hall funds.

Dates for 2016

Although it is fairly full, we have some spaces for bookings in our diary. If you have an idea for a regular club or meeting forum, please contact Peter Angove (883288) to discuss days and charges.

Members of the Not So Young Club have very kindly donated £100 towards our replacement window fund. We are very grateful to them.

A new cooker hood has been fitted in the kitchen: please follow the instructions when using the cooking facilities.

As I reported in the February Broadsheet, we are being awarded a grant by Burwash Parish Council to purchase some more substantial padded chairs (and possibly some new tables) for our whist evenings at the Hall. We are very grateful to the councillors for their help.
