General

The Burwash Branch of the Royal British Legion has around 60 members and concentrates on the annual Poppy collection, the Remembrance Sunday service in the Parish Church and supporting the Legion in their works to assist Ex-Servicemen, especially in this time of war.

Although very interested in the High Street memorial, this is owned by the Parish Council.  The lantern in the top of the memorial is lit on the anniversary of the death of each Burwash (including Burwash Common and Burwash Weald) man or woman listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register.

Quarterly meetings and an AGM in early October are held, usually in the Rose and Crown pub and notices of these meetings should be on the Legion notice board outside Jarvis the butchers in the High Street, if it has not been vandalised.

The Burwash Roll of Honour was prepared for the Parish Council by a member of the Branch and contains the names of 135 Burwash dead from the Great War and 29 dead from the Second World War plus 2 officially listed Civilian War Dead. For a village of no more than 3,000 inhabitants, this was a truly terrible loss.  500 Burwash men enlisted in the Great War and 37% died.

All are welcome to become members of the Branch, the only requirement is that you support the aims of the Legion in their vital work in assisting Ex-Service men and women and their families and furthering Remembrance of those who served in the past.
