Burwash Playing Field Association

Registered Charity No. 305191

Burwash Playing Field Association is a charitable organisation established to administer and manage Swan Meadow playing field, Ham Lane, Burwash.  The site is registered and maintained as a playing field in perpetuity.

The pavilion and sports hall on Swan Meadow playing field were constructed in 1998 at the same time as the two all weather tennis courts with the assistance of a Sports Council Lottery grant.

The playing field, pavilion and the children’s play area are maintained by fundraising and donations which the B.P.F.A. Committee administer and manage.

The tennis courts are currently maintained by agreement by the Tennis Club.

Burwash Fair on August Bank Holiday Monday is the single largest annual fundraising event in the Parish and is run by the B.P.F.A. to help meet annual costs and also enables other charitable groups within the community and national charities to raise funds for their needs.

The Officers and Committee of the B.P.F.A. are appointed by election at the Annual General Meeting each April for the forthcoming year and are usually trustees of the association.

Swan Meadow is the base for the village Cricket, Football, Stoolball, Tennis and Junior Sport clubs as well as the Bonfire Society, Youth Club, Horticultural Society and a number of other groups and is also used by Burwash C.E.P. School for sports day, games and out of school clubs.

BPFA ~ Swings and things ~ Our children's playground in Swan Meadow

Many people will be aware that the current Children's Playground was established about 20 years ago and is now desperately in need of replacement.

Some two years ago fund raising efforts started. Thanks to peoples' generosity and hard work we are on the way but children's play equipment is very expensive and we need to keep up and accelerate the fund raising.

In villages nearby there are playgrounds that have more modern equipment and are therefore more appealing to our children. We would like our new equipment to be exciting and challenging and bring families to the village and not take them out of the village as happens now!

To date we have raised £13,500 which is excellent but we need somewhere around £60,000. Currently we are working on a Grant Application for a Rother Community Grant of £30,000 which is the maximum grant of 50% of the total sum permitted. We have also applied for £10,000 grant from Burwash Parish Council precept for 2012 (April) and await the outcome.  Furthermore we have applied to WARR (Wealden and Rother Rural) Partnership for £5,000 for equipment not covered by the Rother Community Grant and again wait to see the outcome.  Applications for Grants have been made to other organisations such as the Co-op and AXA PPP.

Our own fund raising continues…before Christmas we raised over £1,000 with a talk by Dan Tebay on Climbing Everest and quizzes at the Bear and Rose & Crown. Our most grateful thanks to all those involved at a very busy time of year.

This year we have several more events planned including a family celebration for the Diamond Jubilee and a musical evening. The Burwash Fair on August Bank Holiday Monday (27th August) is also on the calendar.  Please watch this space for further details.
